Understanding Number Spoofing

Number spoofing occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the caller ID displayed to the recipient. This is used in scam and fraud calls.

How Spoofing Works

VoIP technology allows the SIP From header to be set to any number. Scammers exploit this to impersonate banks, government agencies, or your own number. Spoofed calls often appear in your CDR as missed calls from your own number.

Is Your Number Being Spoofed?

If customers are calling you back after receiving calls you didn't make, your number may be spoofed. This is not a security breach of your VoIP account — your account is not compromised. The scammer is simply using your number in the CLI field of unrelated calls.

What PC Madness VoIP Does

We validate outbound CLI — you can only send calls with a CLI matching a number assigned to your account. This prevents your VoIP service from being used to spoof others. We also participate in ACMA's Reducing Scam Calls code.

Reporting Spoofing

Report number spoofing to the ACMA (acma.gov.au/report-scam-number). If you're receiving spoofed calls to your VoIP line, enable anonymous call blocking in your Call Flow Designer by routing calls with no CLI to a rejection or announcement node.
